Uber in Copenhagen and Other Ride-sharing Apps
Let’s dive in to discover what ride-share options are available in Copenhagen.
Is There Uber in Copenhagen?
Surprisingly, the answer is no.
As the capital of a very modern country, you would expect Uber to be in Copenhagen, but legal battles with the government sent Uber packing in 2017.
Why, you may wonder? Well, it has to do with the definition of ride-sharing. From the eyes of the Danish government, ride-sharing means the driver is headed in a particular direction and is willing to let you ride with them for a fee. On the other hand, a taxi service picks up a passenger and takes them to their destination.
We have all been in an Uber, and it is pretty clear which one Uber’s business model aligned with, which meant that Uber drivers needed to install expensive taxi meters, video surveillance systems, and seat sensors to operate under the new legislation back in 2017. These new laws made it prohibitively expensive for Uber, so the Company decided to exit Copenhagen and all of Denmark as a result.
This means no Lyft, Careem, or other widely recognized ride-sharing apps are available in Denmark.
Are There Other Ride-sharing Apps in Copenhagen?
You may be surprised, but YES, there are, in fact, other ride-sharing apps in Copenhagen that can be used that are truly ride-sharing apps.
The most popular ride-sharing app in Denmark is Go More, a web and app-based platform connecting drivers with passengers. Unlike Uber, Go More connects drivers and passengers headed in the same direction. You can find where drivers are headed and their time of departure using the website or the app. The ride-share app is designed to allow people to help other people while also saving on the cost of travel.
